Hair Loss Cures

Hair loss cures
Hair loss can result for many reasons.  Hair loss is most common for people who have a history of hair loss in their family.  This form of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia, or male/female pattern baldness.  This form of hair loss is the most common type of hair loss and affects both men and women equally.

There are steps for reversing the affects of this type of hair loss.  The non-prescription drug minoxidil (aka Rogaine) is known to help re-grow hair.  Another drug known to help with hair loss is called finasteride (aka Propecia).  Propecia is only available through a prescription and works only for men.  Rogaine is applied directly to the scalp, whereas Propecia is a pill to be taken once a day.  However, both methods take about 6 months to have an effect.

There are many other causes for hair loss in both men and women.  Hormone imbalances can cause unnatural hair loss and are usually temporary.  The cure to any hormone imbalance is to return the hormones to their correct levels.

For women, regular loss of blood as a result of the menstrual cycle is known to deplete the normal levels of iron.  Low iron in the system can cause hair loss.  Iron pill supplements or certain foods that are high in iron will help return levels to normal.

Low levels of protein in the diet are known to cause hair loss as well.  This happens to many people that go on vegetarian diets and do not supplement their protein intake.  When the body does not receive enough protein, it saves protein by forcing hair into its resting phase longer than it would normally.  After two to three months of this, the hair will begin to shed in excess.  The solution to this problem is quick and painless – eat more protein.

The thyroid and the pituitary glands are also known to have a connection to hair loss.  Problems with either gland can result in pre-mature hair loss.  With proper medical treatment, the problem can usually be corrected.

Despite all the treatments out there, there are daily lifestyle choices that can do a lot to slow down or prevent hair loss.  Regular exercise, a proper diet, and a regular hair hygiene routine go a long way to preventing hair loss.  A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables and low in starch may help slow down hair loss and stimulate hair growth.
