Hair Loss in Women

Hair loss in women is more than just a problem that affects the physical.  It also presents a host of psychological issues that are too often overlooked.
Hair is an important part of how we view ourselves in society.  In most societies around the world, a full head of hair is recognized as a symbol of power, virility, and youth.  So what happens when we start to lose our hair earlier than we expect and what can we do about it?
The effect of hair loss on women and men vary greatly.  Hair loss is typically regarded more casually for a man than for women, especially in later years.  As a result, hair loss in women can be particularly devastating.  Yet millions of women around the world experience some sort of hair loss at an early age.  According to the American Hair Loss Association, more than 35 million American women suffer from hair loss.
Hair loss often leaves women with feelings of loneliness, isolation, hopelessness, and low self-esteem.  For years, women had no central online community to discuss these issues.    Fortunately, this changed when in 2007 the Women’s Hair Loss Project opened its doors.  It first started as a simple blog chronicling the struggles of a young woman who was experiencing hair loss and looking for support on the web. “Well the women’s hair loss project is just an idea I thought of whilst feeling horribly sad and depressed about my own hair loss situation,” the creator of the Project explains, “….I knew if there was a place where I could read about the daily dealings of another woman with hair loss that I would. It would help me to feel not so alone.”  From this simple idea, she inspired thousands of Internet users around the globe to share their stories and extend their support.
The Women’s Hair Loss Project seeks to unite women suffering from hair loss around through their shared experiences and emotions.  The project offers a nurturing environment to find information on how to deal with the physical and psychological effects of hair loss.  From tips on methods to stop hair loss to the best wigs to wear, the Women’s Hair Loss Project provides a viable community to discuss an often-overlooked problem plaguing women around the world.
The Women’s Hair Loss Project receives funding from several generous sponsors so that it can broaden awareness, reach more people, and help more women cope with this serious problem.
